Vincent Peillon (born July 7, 1960 in Suresnes ) is a French philosopher and politician of the Parti socialiste (PS). From 2012 to 2014 he was Minister for Education, Youth and Sport in the governments of Jean-Marc Ayrault .

Life

Vincent Peillon is the son of the banker Gilles Peillon (1928–2007), who was temporarily director general of the Banque Commerciale pour l'Europe du Nord - Eurobank , a bank controlled by the USSR. His maternal grandfather is Léon Blum (1872–1950). An uncle on his mother's side is the endocrinologist Étienne-Émile Baulieu (* 1926). Peillon studied philosophy . From 1997 to 2002 Peillon was a member of the French National Assembly . From 2004 to 2012 Peillon was a member of the European Parliament .

A few days after his appointment as Minister of Education in France, Peillon announced that one of his first projects would be to present a draft law in autumn 2012 to abolish and abolish the reduction in weekly school days for elementary school pupils, introduced in 2008 under Sarkozy, which included four school days with a Wednesday off school going back to a 5 day week. By order of Vincent Peillon, a charte de laïcité à l'école ( charter of secularity in schools) has been posted in all French state schools since September 9, 2013 . When the Valls I cabinet was formed, Peillon was no longer taken into account, and Benoît Hamon became his successor as Minister of Education . At the beginning of May 2014, he resumed his mandate as a MEP and was re-elected in the 2014 European elections.

Since 2014 he has been teaching as an associate professor for philosophy at the University of Neuchatel.

On December 12, 2016, Peillon announced his application to the Socialist Party primaries for the PS candidate in the 2017 presidential election . In the first round of the primary elections in January 2017, he failed in 4th place with 6.85% of the vote and subsequently refused to support one of the two winners in the runoff election.
