Michel Sapin (born April 9, 1952 in Boulogne-Billancourt , Hauts-de-Seine department ) is a French politician of the Parti Socialiste (PS) and was Minister of Economics and Finance from August 2016 to May 2017 . Sapin, the son of a business manager , studied at two elite universities: first began studying literature in 1974 at the École normal supérieure (ENS Paris) and became a member of the Parti Socialiste in 1975. In 1978 he began further studies at the École nationale d'administration (ENA), where he attended the Voltaire class , which he graduated in 1980, together with François Hollande , Ségolène Royal , Dominique de Villepin and Pierre-René Lemas . He then worked for the Administrative Court of Paris.

Sapin began his political career in 1981 when, as a candidate for the SP, he was first elected member of the National Assembly in 1981 , initially for the Indre department , and from 1986 for the Hauts-de-Seine department . During this time he was Secretary of the National Assembly from 1983 to 1984 and then Vice-President between 1984 and 1985. From 1988 he was temporarily chairman of the legal committee. In November 2011, he was appointed to François Hollande's team for his candidacy in the 2012 presidential election .
