Myriam El Khomri (born February 18, 1978 in Rabat , Morocco ) is a French politician of the Parti Socialiste (PS) and was Minister for Labor, Employment and Social Dialogue from September 2015 to May 2017.

Life

Myriam El Khomri was born in Rabat and spent the first years of her life in Tangier , where her mother was employed as a teacher. Her father is a native Moroccan, her mother comes from Brittany . When she was nine years old, her mother returned with her to France, where they lived in the Bordeaux area .

El Khomri studied public law at the University of Montesquieu Bordeaux IV and Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne in Paris. She completed her studies in 2001. At the end of her studies, she completed an internship with the then Minister for Urban Development, Claude Bartolone . From 2001 she worked for the mayors of the 18th arrondissement of Paris, Annick Lepetit and Daniel Vaillant .

El Khomri is married and has two daughters.

Political career

Myriam El Khomri joined the Parti Socialiste in 2002, after Jean-Marie Le Pen had entered the second round of the French presidential elections. From 2012 she was a member of the party executive committee ( bureau national ) and from May 2014 she was secretary of the PS for security issues.

In 2008 El Khomri was elected to the Paris City Council and, under Mayor Bertrand Delanoë, was initially an alderman for the protection of children and young people, and from 2011 for safety and prevention. After moving to Anne Hidalgo in the mayor's office , her area of responsibility was expanded to include urban development and integration. For Hidalgo, she was also the campaign spokeswoman.

On August 26, 2014, El Khomri was appointed State Secretary for Urban Development in the Valls II cabinet ; she then resigned her functions in the Parti Socialiste and in the Paris city government, but is still a member of the Paris city council. On September 2, 2015, she became Minister for Labor, Employment and Social Dialogue, succeeding François Rebsamen . It was responsible for drawing up comprehensive labor legislation ( loi El Khomri or loi travail ), which was highly controversial in France. in particular because it enables deviations from general collective agreements and, in some cases, labor laws through company agreements. The government enacted the law through a derogation from the French constitution without parliamentary approval after it became apparent that the law would not achieve a majority of its own in the ruling groups. A vote of no confidence in the government sought by dissenters of the socialist faction failed because of only two votes. The circumstances of the legislation are strongly linked to El Khomri personally. The Mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo , sharply rejected El Khomri's application for a parliamentary candidacy in Paris in 2017: This was a “very bad idea” , as the law named after El Khomri was associated with “a traumatization” that “does not involve the it fits together what the Parisians expect from us. ” Since May 15, 2017, Muriel Pénicaud has been her successor in the new cabinet under President Emmanuel Macron .

In the parliamentary elections in June 2017, El Khomri's attempt to enter the French parliament as a member of parliament failed .
