Claude Bartolone (2008)

Claude Bartolone (born July 29, 1951 in Tunis , then the French protectorate of Tunisia ) is a French politician of the Parti Socialiste (PS) and was President of the French National Assembly from June 26, 2012 to June 20, 2017 .

Claude Bartolone is the son of an Italian from Sicily and a Maltese . He came to France at the age of nine and is a mathematician . He has been a member of the Parti Socialiste since 1974. He has been a member of the French National Assembly since 1981 (with interruptions during his tenure as minister from 1998 to 2002), initially for the sixth and since 2012 for the ninth constituency of the Seine-Saint-Denis department . From April 1992 to March 1993 he was Vice President of the National Assembly.

From 1995 to 1998 Bartolone was Mayor of Le Pré-Saint-Gervais , from 1998 to 2002 Deputy Minister for Urban Development in the government of Lionel Jospin . Since 2008 he has been President of the General Council of Seine-Saint-Denis.

Within the Parti Socialiste, Claude Bartolone is a leading figure in the Rassembler A Gauche movement , who is close to Laurent Fabius , with whom he is considered closely connected. In 2007 he was a member of Ségolène Royal's election campaign team , and in 2008 he supported Martine Aubry's candidacy as première secrétaire (party chairman) of the Parti Socialiste. In the same year he became secretary for international relations on the board of the PS, which led to a distancing from Fabius.

In the run-up to the French parliamentary elections in 2012 , Ségolène Royal was considered the most likely candidate for the presidency of the National Assembly if the left won the election. After Royal was not elected to the National Assembly, Bartolone announced his application for the presidency on June 18, 2012. On June 21, 2012, he was nominated President of the National Assembly by the Left in Parliament. Besides him, Jean Glavany , Elisabeth Guigou and Daniel Vaillant had applied . On June 26, 2012, he was elected President with 298 votes in the constituent session of the National Assembly; his rival candidate and predecessor Bernard Accoyer received 185 votes.
