Bernard Accoyer (born August 12, 1945 in Lyon ) is a French politician . He is a member of the conservative UMP and was President of the French National Assembly from June 26, 2007 to June 19, 2012 . Accoyer is also Mayor of Annecy-le-Vieux .

Life

Bernard Accoyer is a trained specialist in ear, nose and throat medicine .

In 1981 he became a member of the Rassemblement pour la République (RPR), which later became part of the UMP , of which Accoyer is now a member. His political career began with his election as mayor of Annecy-le-Vieux in 1989. He still holds this office today.

In 1992 Accoyer was elected to the General Council of the Haute-Savoie department , of which he was a member until 1998.

In 1993 he was elected to the National Assembly for the first constituency in Haute-Savoie and confirmed in all subsequent elections. From 2002 he was first deputy chairman of the UMP parliamentary group in the National Assembly, from 2004 then chairman. Even before the 2007 parliamentary elections , he announced his candidacy for the presidency of the National Assembly for the coming legislative period. In the UMP nomination process, he prevailed against the previous President Patrick Ollier and was elected President of the National Assembly with 314 votes in the constituent session of the 13th National Assembly on June 26, 2007. His socialist rival Marylise Lebranchu received 216 votes. Accoyer also ran for the presidency of the 14th National Assembly, but was defeated by 185 votes to Claude Bartolone (298 votes), who had been proposed by the socialist majority faction.

On November 29, 2016, Accoyer was named Secretary-General of the Republicans at the suggestion of the presidential candidate François Fillon .
