Daniel Vaillant (born July 19, 1949 in Lormes , Département Nièvre ) is a French politician of the Parti socialiste .

Vaillant has been a member of the National Assembly since 2002 , where he currently represents the 17th constituency of Paris . Between 1988 and 1993 and between 1994 and 1997 he was a member of the National Assembly. From August 2000 to May 2002 he was the French Minister of the Interior ( Ministre de l'Intérieur ) in the government of his party friend Lionel Jospin , having previously been Minister for Relations with Parliament ( Ministre des Relations avec le Parlement ) since 1997 . From 1995 to 2001 and from 2003 to 2014 he was mayor of the 18th arrondissement of Paris . He resigned from this office because the socialist candidate for the office of mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo , wanted a separation of office and mandate and thus no district mayors who are also MPs.

Vaillant spoke u. a. in a newspaper article for legalization of cannabis . In the dispute over Muslim believers in the 18th arrondissement who prayed on the street because of the lack of space in the mosque, he advocated a pragmatic solution. The mairie of the arrondissement allowed the prayers until a larger mosque was completed.
