Philippe Marchand (born September 1, 1939 in Angoulême , † January 10, 2018 in Saintes ) was a French lawyer and politician ( PS ) of the Fifth Republic . He was Minister of the Interior from 1991 to 1992 .

Life

Marchand was born the son of a lawyer . After attending the College in Parthenay , he completed a law degree at the University of Poitiers . In 1965 he started working as a lawyer in Saintes.

Marchand joined the Parti socialiste (PS) in 1973. From 1976 to 2001 he was a member of the General Council of the canton of Saintes-Nord and from 1982 to 1985 President of the General Council in the Charente-Maritime department . In 1978 he was elected as a member of the National Assembly, of which he was a member until 1991. In 1985 he was Vice President of the National Assembly.

From July 17, 1990 to January 29, 1991 he was Assistant Minister in the Ministry of the Interior , which he then headed until April 2, 1992 in the governments led by Prime Ministers Michel Rocard and Édith Cresson .

In February 2006 he left the Socialist Party.
