Matthias Fekl (born October 4, 1977 in Frankfurt am Main ) is a French politician . He was Minister of the Interior in the Cazeneuve Cabinet and was previously Secretary of State for Foreign Trade, Tourism and French Abroad.

biography

Fekl was born in Frankfurt am Main as the son of a German and a French woman. He is therefore German and French in accordance with the principle of descent in both countries . He grew up in Berlin , where he spent most of his school days at the French grammar school . Fekl obtained his Abitur at the Paris Lycée Henri IV . This school has its own preparatory classes for admission to elite universities . He then studied political science and later graduated from the École nationale d'administration (ENA).

His political career began when he joined the Parti socialiste in 2001, within which he belongs to the Terra Nova movement, founded by Olivier Ferrand in 2008 . In the same year, he entered the Marmande municipal council . In 2010 he was elected Vice-President of the Regional Council of the Aquitaine Region and from the same year worked as assistant to the later Senate President Jean-Pierre Bel . In the 2012 parliamentary elections , he ran in the second constituency of the Lot-et-Garonne department and was elected to the National Assembly.

During the celebrations to mark the 50th anniversary of the Élysée Treaty in January 2013, Fekl spoke out in favor of strengthening Franco-German relations.

After Thomas Thévenoud , State Secretary responsible for foreign trade and tourism, resigned on September 4, 2014, Prime Minister Manuel Valls appointed Fekl as his successor in his government. His mandate in the National Assembly has been suspended since then.

On March 21, 2017, Fekl was appointed Minister of the Interior following the resignation of Bruno Le Roux . Fekl lost his post after just two months after the newly elected President Emmanuel Macron appointed the Philippe government .
