Marmande is a French city with 17,691 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Lot-et-Garonne in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine . The city is the seat of the sub-prefecture ( French Sous-préfecture ) of the arrondissement Marmande , which consists of ten cantons . The city is the capital of the cantons of Marmande-1 and Marmande-2 .

Marmande is located between Bordeaux (about 90 kilometers northwest) and Agen (about 65 kilometers southwest) on the eastern, right bank of the Garonne . The place has its own train station on the Bordeaux – Sète line of the SNCF .

history

During the Albigensian Crusade , the Crusaders committed a massacre under Prince Louis (VIII) of France after conquering the city in 1219, which killed 5,000 residents.

Sports

Every year on the eve of the French national holiday, July 14th, the Grand Prix of France takes place on the motorcycle grass track as part of the World Long Track World Championship.

Culture

The multi-disciplinary open-air music festival Garorock has been taking place in the city since 1997 .
