The phylloxera crisis in viticulture and the loss of jobs due to the mechanization of agriculture have led to a continuous population decline since the second half of the 19th century, which has only come to a standstill in the last few decades.

economy

For centuries, the residents of the community lived on the produce of their fields and gardens, self-sufficient ; cattle breeding and viticulture were also carried out. Craftsmen, small traders and service providers also settled in the village. Since the 1960s, some of the vacant houses, but also new buildings, have been used as holiday apartments ( gîtes ) . Monteton has regained new importance as a wine town; the wines produced here are marketed under the appellations Agenais , Comté Tolosan and Côtes du Marmandais .

history

In the 11th or 12th centuries, monks of the Benedictine abbey of Sarlat-la-Canéda maintained a priory in La Sauvetat-du-Dropt , only 9 km away ; They also cleared land in the Monteton area and built an imposing church. During the Hundred Years War (1337–1453) between England and France and the Huguenot Wars (1562–1598), the place seems to have been spared.

Attractions

Château de Monteton
  • The lower part of the apse of the former priory and today's parish church of Notre-Dame is built from precisely hewn stones; the upper part, the entire nave and the west facade with its four-part bell gable were built from only slightly hewn rubble stones . All outer walls are stabilized by buttresses . The small Gothic portal is on the south side. The four-bay nave , the thick outer walls of which provide additional structural security, is covered by a barrel vault with belt arches slightly pointed at the apex ; the apse has the usual dome vault . Church construction has been recognized as a monument historique since 1926 .
  • The Château de Monteton was built in the 17th century on the site of a ruined and demolished medieval castle. It was inhabited until the beginning of the 20th century, but then the building, which was classified as a Monument Historique in 2008, was abandoned. Two families are taking care of a partially modern conversion for residential purposes.
