The phylloxera crisis in viticulture and the loss of jobs due to the mechanization of agriculture have led to a continuous population decline since the first half of the 20th century, which has only come to a standstill in recent years.

economy

For centuries, the residents of the community lived on the produce of their fields and gardens, self-sufficient ; cattle breeding and viticulture were also carried out. Craftsmen, small traders and service providers also settled in the village. Since the 1960s, some of the vacant houses, but also new buildings, have been used as holiday apartments ( gîtes ) . La Sauvetat-du-Dropt has gained new importance as a wine town, because it belongs to the Côtes de Duras ; the wines produced here are marketed under the appellations Agenais , Comté Tolosan and Côtes du Marmandais .

history

Monks of the Benedictine abbey of Sarlat-la-Canéda maintained a priory here in the 11th or 12th century . After the marriage between Eleanor of Aquitaine and Heinrich Plantagenet (1152), the area belonged to the Angevin Empire , but remained controversial between England and France during the Hundred Years War (1337-1453), and was affected by the turmoil of the Huguenot Wars (1562-1598) and the peasant revolts ( jacqueria ) not spared. In the 16th century the place and its church became Protestant; Catholic again at the beginning of the 17th century.

Attractions

Saint Germain Church
  • The 23-arch bridge over the Dropt River and the adjacent former marshland dates from the 13th century and was located on a branch route of the Way of St. James . The piers in the river had to be repeatedly repaired as a result of damage; 11 arches have round arches and 12 have pointed arches . The bridge was classified as a Monument Historique in 1992 .
  • The origins of the Saint-Germain church may date back to early Christian times. The current building still has a Romanesque apse ; however, the nave was renewed in the 14th and 15th centuries. In the 17th century the church was again on the verge of collapse. In 1804 it was demolished; only a few parts of the previous building (including the medieval choir and the portal) have been preserved. It was not until the end of the 19th century that a new building with side chapels began , which also includes the mighty bell tower . The approx. 40 m long church is one of the largest in the department.
  • The church of the Protestant community (temple) is an unadorned building from the beginning of the 17th century.
