Antagnac ( Occitan Antanhac ) is a commune with 231 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Lot-et-Garonne in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine (before 2016 Aquitaine ). The inhabitants are called Antagnacais .

Antagnac is located in the Landes de Gascogne landscape between Grignols and Casteljaloux , the municipality borders on the Gironde department . The former Route nationale 655 , which became the Route départementale D655, runs through the municipality .

Surname
In a work called Archives historiques de la Gironde , the village is mentioned in 1316 under the name of Saint Jean d'Antinhac , the name Antinhac either from the Gallo-Roman family name Antanius or a string of the words an (an) and tann (oak). The suffix -ac indicates the presence of Gallo-Roman culture .
history
Between September 1939 and June 1940, the residents of Volgelsheim ( Haut-Rhin ) were resettled in the municipality of Antagnac and the neighboring town of Ruffiac after a ten-kilometer zone along the Franco-German border had to be evacuated for the French army. A street in Volgelsheim is still called Rue d'Antagnac today .
In 1972 Antagnac and Ruffiac merged, and in 2001 the communities went their separate ways.
Demographics
The population development in Antagnac has been documented since 1793. With the exception of 2006, statistics were published annually by Insee.

- The Gothic-style Saint-Jean-Baptiste church, built in the 15th century, features an opening bell gable, flanked by two rectangular towers connected by a gallery, and the unique ogival nave
