history

Archaeological investigations have revealed traces of settlement dating back to the sixth century. The Roman road from today's Aiguillon to Eysses, now a hamlet of Villeneuve-sur-Lot , crossed Lafitte-sur-Lot.

In 1271 the village was mentioned in a saisimentum , a document of an oath of office, as a fortified place ( castrum ). The houses of the small parish were grouped in a semicircle around the parish church. At that time the road from Clairac to Villeneuve-sur-Lot ran through the village.

In the second half of the 16th century, the ideas of Protestantism quickly reached Lafitte-sur-Lot and were adopted by the majority of the population there. The Catholic Church was able to regain its influence for a short time until 1575 . Thirteen years later, Jacques II. De Goÿon de Matignon , Marshal of France , led a punitive expedition against Lafitte on the side of the Catholics. The Protestants of Lafitte remained in control of the situation and the Protestant church was not closed until 1683.

Population development

After records began, the population rose to around 1,120 by the middle of the 19th century. In the period that followed, the size of the community sank to a level of around 750 inhabitants with short recovery phases until after the Second World War , until a growth phase began at the turn of the millennium, which continues to this day.

Parish Church of Saint-Sauveur

Around 1130, the priory of Saint-Sacerdos de Lafitte was mentioned among the estates of the Abbey of La Sauve-Majeure in La Sauve in what is now the Gironde department . In 1197, under the name of Sainte-Marie-de-Lafitte , the priory was mentioned as belonging to the Abbey of La Sauve-Majeure. Based on the entrance portal and parts of the vault , the new building of the current church can probably be determined to be in the 15th century.

The Vicar Valéri visited the church in 1551 and stated no Lutherans among the faithful, while only a short time later, a convert in 1560, the parish to Protestantism and the church was abandoned. The records of the visit of an archpriest in 1639 mention the poor condition of the structure, especially the vault, but also the walls.

In 1742 the chancel was given a new vault and the ceiling of the nave was clad with paneling . At the beginning of the 20th century the church consisted of a nave with a length of two bays , a transept and a three-walled apse . The ribbed vault comes as now partly from the 15th to the other part of a later period. The west facade with the bell tower has two ogival entrance portals, which are framed by two buttresses . The upper part of the bell tower shows four wall openings for the bell work. A round half tower occupies the northern corner. The tower and nave are covered with hollow bricks. In the years 1998 to 2000 restorations were carried out on the outside.

The furnishings in the church are mainly from the 19th and 20th centuries. Six stained glass windows were created in the second half of the 19th century by the glass painter Louis-Victor Gesta (1866–1938) from Toulouse . They show in the arched lancets:

Saint-Sauveur Castle

In the first half of the 16th century, the Renaissance period , the castle was built as a small mansion. The rectangular building had two floors and an attic and was covered with flat tiles. A dovecote with a tent roof made of flat tiles joined to the south. A polygonal stair tower to the east provided access to the floors. The fresco from the hood of a chimney on the first floor was covered over around 1560 when the village converted to Protestantism. It was a depiction of the adoration of the kings . It dates from the first half of the 16th century and is by an unknown artist who may have been inspired by a work by Leonardo da Vinci . Restoration work in 1955 exposed the fresco again.

In the 17th or 18th century, a rectangular residential wing was added as an extension to the north. Work on the window openings in the 1950s distorted the original appearance of this extension.

The residential wing from the Renaissance period with its stair tower has been inscribed as a monument historique since January 13, 2000 .

Protestant church

It was built in the early 19th century as a new building or as a remodeling of an existing house. The walls of the rectangular, one-story building are built alternately from bricks and stones, the roof is covered with hollow tiles. Four front windows in the form of segmental arches give light to the interior. On the right side is the entrance with an overlying oculus .

Poudepé Castle

It was built in the 18th century in the hamlet of the same name on the road from Clairac to Villeneuve-sur-Lot, today's Route départementale 146E. Several buildings enclose a U-shaped inner courtyard, which is closed off by a wall from the street. The residential wing is made of plastered quarry stone with a roof that is covered with hollow bricks. Its width is seven yokes. Arched segment windows let light into the building. Lukarne with triangular or curvilinear gables give light to the attic. The arched entrance in the middle is framed by flat pilasters . The rear facade faces the Lot River. Two square pavilions covered with slate are located at either end.

The outbuildings are built as bricks. Their roofs are covered with hollow tiles. The dovecotes have tent roofs made of flat tiles.
