Pardaillan is a French municipality with 308 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Lot-et-Garonne in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine (before 2016: Aquitaine ). The municipality belongs to the arrondissement Marmande and the canton Les Coteaux de Guyenne (until 2015: canton Duras ).
The name of the medieval castle gave the municipality its name. The first name of the parish was Notre-Dame-de-Gabirac, after a property that belonged to a certain Gabrius .
The inhabitants are called Pardaillannais and Pardaillannaises .
geography
Pardaillan is located about 20 kilometers northeast of Marmande in the historic province of Agenais on the northwestern edge of the department.
Pardaillan is surrounded by the eight neighboring communities:
Duras | Saint-Sernin | Saint-Jean-de-Duras |
Auriac-sur-Dropt | La Sauvetat-du-Dropt | |
Monteton Allemans-du-Dropt |
Moustier |
Pardaillan is located in the catchment area of the Garonne River .
The Dropt , a tributary of the Garonne, forms the natural border with the neighboring municipality of Monteton to the south. The Rieutord rises in Pardaillan, runs on the border with the southeastern neighboring municipality of Moustier and flows into the Dropt on the border with Allemans-du-Dropt. The Ruisseau de Malromé is another tributary of the Dropt and crosses the area of the municipality from north to south.
history
The prehistory has left no trace in Pardaillan. In order to defend against the invasions of the Normans , a castle was built in the 10th century, as in many places in the area. The village center, which is now called le Vieux Bourg , developed around the castle. The seigneur was Raymond III. de Ségur, whose successors settled in Allemans, where they built a more comfortable castle there. The parish church, which is now consecrated to Mary , mother of Jesus, was the origin of what is now the center of the community.
In the 16th century, a large part of the population converted to Calvinism , since the seigneur himself was a Protestant . Pardaillan experienced strong development and economic prosperity through numerous merchants until the 18th century and even during the French Revolution .
Population development
After records began, the population rose to a peak of around 1,070 by the middle of the 19th century. In the period that followed, the size of the community decreased with short recovery phases until the 1970s, when it has stabilized at a level of around 320 inhabitants to this day.

Parish Church of Notre-Dame
A priory of Benedictine named Prior de Gasco prope Pardalianum settled in the Middle Ages in the parish. The priory's chapel dates from the 16th century and later became the parish church of the village.
In the Gothic flamboyant style built, it has the floor plan in the shape of a Latin cross . Its transept , which is closed in the east and south, serves as a chancel. The church suffered extensive damage during the Huguenot Wars . The choir and the side chapel were completely destroyed, while the nave and the vaults were partially demolished. Only the northern chapel retained its paneling .
The building was restored in the following centuries. At the end of the 18th century, the entrance portal was completely redesigned. A sacristy was added in the 19th century . At the same time, the bell tower was demolished and threatened to crumble. This work lasted until 1880. At the same time, the furnishings were expanded to include a marble altar, a statue of the Virgin Mary made of gilded wood, a chandelier and a candelabra .
Saint-Front church
The small Romanesque church in the hamlet of the same name, Saint-Front, was originally a parish church. In the 19th century, however, the parish became a branch of Pardaillan. The building is relatively small and has a simple nave with a plaster ceiling. A bell gable towers over the nave . It is pierced by three arcades with a bell from 1137. Inside the church there is a marble altar, a crossroads of stucco and several statues . The valuable furnishings that were once kept in the church were stolen during the Huguenot Wars. The parish of Pardaillan had the church restored in 1934.
Castle ruins
A castle was built in the course of the 10th century in a strategic place on a rock spur above the valley of the Ruisseau de Malromé. It replaced a fort that was previously on the site and served to ward off invasions by the Normans. The most famous Seigneur of Pardaillan was Pierre d'Escodéca de Boisse in the 17th century, a companion of Henry III. of Navarre . Only remnants of this early structure can be seen today. The earlier buildings that surrounded the castle have also disappeared today. However, some elements of the new building from the 13th century have survived, such as the wall surface of a tower. It still has window openings, loopholes and chimneys that date from the 15th century. The presence of a well suggests the existence of an earlier underground facility. A sculpted fragment in the shape of a head was found near the castle ruins.
