Toponymy

There are three theories for the origin of the name Agnac :

  • Agnac comes from the Latin agni aqua (German water of the lamb )
  • Agnac comes from a Gallo-Roman landowner, Annius
  • Agnac comes from the Vedic god Agni , who represents the fire form of the divine

history

The municipality of Agnac was founded by the merger of two parishes, which was signed before the Concordat of 1801: Agnac (Diocese of Périgueux) and Iffour (Diocese of Agen). The station of La Sauvetat-du-Dropt was built in Agnac, which was busy between 1886 and 1953 with three daily trains in the directions Bordeaux , Marmande and Bergerac . In the novel Les Impudents , published in 1943, the author Marguerite Duras reports on past rail operations in the region.
