Eymet ( Occitan : Aimet ) is a French municipality with 2630 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the department of Dordogne in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine . Eymet belongs to the Arrondissement of Bergerac and is the main town (chef-lieu) of the canton of Sud-Bergeracois .
geography
Eymet is located in the Périgord region about 22 kilometers south-southeast of Bergerac on the Dropt River . In the west the community is bounded by the Escourou . Eymet is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Fonroque in the north, Serres-et-Montguyard in the east and northeast, Lauzun and Bourgougnague in the southeast, Agnac in the south, La Sauvetat-du-Dropt in the southwest, Soumensac in the west and Saint-Julien-Innocence-Eulalie with Sainte-Eulalie-d'Eymet in the north-west.
The former Route nationale 133 and the Via Lemovicensis , one of the four historical " Routes of the St. James pilgrims in France ", run through the municipality .
history
According to the Peutinger table, the village goes back to the Gallo-Roman settlement of Diolindum. Eymet is a bastide founded by Alphonse de Poitiers in 1270 . The place was devastated in the Hundred Years War. In 1794 the towns of Drayaux and Sainte-Colombe were incorporated. On June 21, 1944, the Germans carried out a massacre in revenge against the Resistance.
