Bonneville - Saint-Jean-Baptiste Church

Bonneville-et-Saint-Avit- de-Fumadières ( Occitan : Bonavila e Sent Avit de Fumadièras ) is a southwestern French community with 323 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Dordogne in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine .

location

Bonneville-et-Saint-Avit-de-Fumadières is located on the north bank of the Dordogne at an altitude of about 30 meters above sea level. d. M. in the far west of the Dordogne department near the border with the Gironde department . The nearest major city is Bergerac , the capital of the arrondissement, about 40 kilometers to the east .

The two formerly independent districts merged into one municipality in 1836.

In the 19th century the place usually had over 300 inhabitants. As a result of the phylloxera crisis in viticulture and the mechanization of agriculture, the number of inhabitants has since dropped to the lowest levels in the 1970s and 1980s.

economy

In earlier times, the inhabitants of the community lived as self-sufficient farmers from agriculture, which also included viticulture and a little cattle farming. Since medieval times, some of the wine produced in the area has been shipped to England in barrels and on rafts or barges via the Dordogne and the ports on the Gironde . The soils of the municipality are now part of the Montravel wine-growing region , but the rental of holiday apartments ( gîtes ) also plays an important role in the economic life of the municipality.

Attractions

  • The parish church of St-Jean-Baptiste of Bonneville is an inconspicuous Gothic building from the 13th century, mostly made of rubble , the portal facade of which was renewed in the 16th century. The bell tower added on the north side in the 18th century is also of a later date . The windowless nave is covered by rib vaults; the polygonally broken apse , illuminated by five windows, is vaulted by a ribbed dome .
  • In the Château du Valadou 17th century gave Pierre Loti for a time.
  • A 19th century wash house ( lavoir ) is fed by a spring that also served as a well.
