Calès is a French municipality with 386 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Dordogne in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine (before 2016: Aquitaine ). The municipality belongs to the arrondissement Bergerac and the canton Lalinde (until 2015: canton Le Buisson-de-Cadouin ).

The name is in the Occitan language Calés and goes back to the root word "kal", which means "stone" or "rock", probably in connection with the Latin suffix "ensem". It points to the limestone cliffs that rise steeply over the Dordogne valley .

The inhabitants are called Calésiens and Calésiennes .

Calès is located on the left bank and therefore in the catchment area of ​​the Dordogne river. The Bélingou crosses the territory of the commune and flows into the Dordogne in Calès.

history

In 1124 the parish of Calès was first mentioned in the scriptures. An aqueduct and remnants of a Gallo-Roman settlement attest to a much earlier settlement in the geographically preferred location in a loop of the Dordogne.

When Gabarren once sailed on the Dordogne, Calès owned two harbors, the points of which are still visible today. They were used to load the boats with wood and unload the cargo, which usually consisted of Bordeaux wines .

The church, consecrated to Medardus of Noyon , was built in the 12th century. It has undergone numerous alterations and restorations over the centuries. The former wooden bell tower was destroyed by fire and rebuilt in stone in 1834. On the north wall of the nave a is chapel added. The southern facade is accentuated by narrow buttresses . The routes départementales 28 and 31 create a connection from there to the south-east to the neighboring municipality of Le Buisson-de-Cadouin or to the east to Trémolat, here over a bridge over the Dordogne.

Line 26 of the TER Aquitaine , a regional train of the national SNCF , serves the route from Bordeaux to Sarlat-la-Canéda. It crosses the territory of the commune without stopping at Calès. The next stops are in the neighboring communities of Mauzac-et-Grand-Castang and Trémolat.
