Faux Town Hall

Faux is a French municipality with 630 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Dordogne in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine (before 2016: Aquitaine ). The municipality belongs to the Arrondissement Bergerac and the canton Sud-Bergeracois (until 2015: canton Issigeac ).

The name in the Occitan language is Faus ( German  Buchen ) and goes back to the Latin “fagea” ( German  Buchenwald ).

The inhabitants are called Fallois and Falloises or Fauxois and Fauxoises .

Faux is located about 15 km south-east in the catchment area ( Aire urbaine ) of Bergerac in the Bergeracois region of the historic province of Périgord .

history

As in almost all municipalities in the region, weapons and tools from prehistory were also unearthed during excavations in Faux a few years ago. a. polished axes , grooves , knives, scratches , arrows . Celtic monuments in the form of three dolmens can still be found in several places on the territory of the municipality , a fourth has disappeared since the 1950s. There is also an artificial cave from this era in Faux. Some hamlets of the municipality, z. B. La Genèbre, La Barde, La Robertie or La Jasse, possibly date from the Roman period. By plowing the fields near the hamlet of Le Buth, fragments of thick red roof tiles sometimes come to light, as are characteristic of Roman productions. In the vicinity of the hamlet of La Genèbre there is an old cemetery from early Merovingian times, where numerous graves are provided with stone coffins. Faux lies at the intersection of two country roads, one from Bergerac to Beaumontois en Périgord , the other from Lalinde to Issigeac . Located on a hill, Faux held a noble seat in the Middle Ages and was under the Sénéchaussée of Sarlat . The judicial district included the entire parish and parts of Verdon. In the 16th century a priory was established with St. Saturninus as patron saint . The castle, built in the 18th century, is the sole residence of a seigneur in Faux, but there are no traces of a castle .

Population development

After records began, the population rose in the mid-19th century to a peak of 945. In the following period, the size of the community decreased with brief recovery periods until the 1950s to 410 inhabitants before a period of growth began until the 1980s which raised the population to a relative high of around 615. A phase of stagnation set in until the turn of the millennium, followed by another phase of growth that continues to this day.

The first church was built in 1555, but the current church was built in 1856 by architects Abadie and Biras on the foundations of the previous structure. The bell tower of the neo-Byzantine church was rebuilt in 1886.

The castle may have been built in the 18th century on the foundations of an earlier building. It is located in the center of the parish near the parish church and consists of a residential wing flanked by a round tower. Its multi-sided roofs are decorated with gables. Several families took turns in ownership of the castle, the Larlandie family, the du Repaire family and then the Latour family. The castle is privately owned and is not open to the public.

Dolmen Bourdil

It is not far from the road that leads from the center of the municipality to the hamlet of la Micalie. The capstone has an irregular shape and measures over two meters in length, over one meter in width and about 1.5 m thick. All stone blocks are roughly hewn and consist of limestone , the rock that is also found in the subsoil of the site. The capstone once slipped over the northern orthostats , which it crushed in the process. The remaining four orthostats have an irregular shape.

Dolmen Campguilem

This dolmen is located on a former vineyard property at the entrance to the winery not far from the country road that leads from the center of the municipality to Saint-Cernin-de-Labarde . The capstone measures 2.80 m in the east-west extension, 2.20 m in the north-south extension with a maximum thickness of 2 m. It is made of pebbly limestone like two of its five orthostats, while the remaining three are made of limestone. The capstone on this dolmen has overturned, exposing an opening that is supported by two orthostats. Earthworks and the creation of a parking lot have partially covered the dolmen with earth.

Economy and Infrastructure

In September 2017, a photovoltaic system with an area of ​​16 hectares was inaugurated in Faux on the property of a former target shooting facility and a racetrack that was abandoned in 2009 . It is the first solar power system in the department. The company Urbasolar from Montpellier invested 14.5 million euros in the system, the annual production of which is expected to be 13,733 MWh, the needs of around 5,000 households.
