Saussignac is a French municipality with 428 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Dordogne in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine (before 2016: Aquitaine ). The municipality belongs to the Arrondissement Bergerac and the canton Sud-Bergeracois (until 2015: Canton Sigoulès ).

The name in the Occitan language is Saussinhac . Several theories revolve around its origins. It could come from an estate that belonged to a "Celsinius" in Gallo-Roman times . Another explanation is the derivation of the Latin expression "Saracenorum ignis" ( German  fire of the Saracens ).

The inhabitants are called Saussignacois and Saussignacoises .

Monestier

Saussignac is located in the catchment area of the Dordogne river .

Tributaries of the Seignal irrigate the area of the municipality,

  • the Ruisseau de la Malaise and
  • the Moiron, which rises in Saussignac, together with its tributary,
    • the Marmant, which is also called Ruisseau des Gouttes on its upper reaches.

history

As with many villages in the Périgord, it was a Gallo-Roman villa from which Saussignac evolved, as its remnants attest. In the Middle Ages , the flourishing village belonged to the Seigneurie of Bergerac and the parish church to the Abbaye aux Dames Saintes in Saintes . In 1286, Marguerite Rudel, a noble lady from Bergerac, gave the village and its jurisdiction to a member of the noble family d'Estissac. The parish had existed since the 11th century. At the end of the 18th century, the area was raised to a baronate and then included four parishes, Saussignac, Razac, Monestier and Sainte-Croix . In the 19th century the parish of Razac was merged with that of Saussignac. The municipality of Razac became independent from Saussignac in 1836.

Population development

After the records began, the population rose to a peak of around 1370 by the first half of the 19th century. After the split from Razac-de-Saussignac in 1836, the community lost over half its size. In the period that followed, the number of residents fluctuated between 400 and 450 inhabitants.
