Montaut is a French commune of 130 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Dordogne in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine (before 2016: Aquitaine ). The municipality belongs to the Arrondissement Bergerac and the canton Sud-Bergeracois (until 2015: canton Issigeac ).

The name in the Occitan language is Mont Aut , which means "high mountain".

The inhabitants are called Montois and Montoises .

Montaut is located about 15 km south-east of Bergerac in the Bergeracois area of the historic Périgord province on the southern edge of the department.

The highest point in the municipality is the Terme du Furgou ( 173  m ).

Montaut is located in the catchment area of ​​the Dordogne and Garonne rivers .

The Conne , a tributary of the Dordogne, forms the natural border with the northern neighboring municipality of Faux. The Banège , a tributary of the Dropt , has its source in the municipality.

Montaut is first mentioned in the scriptures in 1273.

Population development

After records began, the number of inhabitants rose to a high of around 335 at the beginning of the 19th century. In the following period, the size of the community was kept at approximately 300 inhabitants up to the 1880s. This was followed by a phase of stagnation, which caused the number of residents to fall to around 100 with short recovery phases by the 1970s, before a phase of moderate growth set in, which still continues today.

Attractions

Parish Church of Saint Vincent

The church, consecrated to Vincent of Valencia , is a new building from 1870. Its west facade shows a narrow entrance, above it a small oculus , a neo-Romanesque twin opening and an arched opening for the bells.

Chartreuse of Péchalvès

The Chartreuse is located in the hamlet of Péchalvès south of the center of Montaut. It was built at the end of the 18th century and was the residence of the Richommes, Joas de Laroque and Montard families. The building is U-shaped around a square tower. The residential wing and its two wings form the main building, although the southern wing is no longer covered with its original roof. The new owners carried out extensive restoration work at the end of the 20th century. The Chartreuse is privately owned and not open to the public.

The Boucle de Marsalou - Montaut circular route is 14.6 km long with a difference in altitude of 45 m. It leads from the center on foot, by bike or on horseback from the center of Montaut through the territory of the municipality, to Issigeac and partly through the neighboring municipality of Monmadalès.

Montaut can be reached via secondary roads that branch off from Route départementale 21, which leads in the north via Monmadalès and further on to Mouleydier on the Bergerac – Sarlat-la-Canéda axis , in the south to Issigeac. Route départementale 22 connects the municipality with the neighboring municipality of Faux in the north, route départementale 27 with Momsac in the northeast. Route départementale 25 crosses Montaut from west to east and connects the municipality in the west with Issigeac, in the east with Naussannes and Beaumontois en Périgord .

Personalities

Robert Soulage, born on June 9, 1913 in Montaut, was a member of the Resistance during World War II and co-founder of the global citizens' movement after the war .
