The continuous decline in population since the second half of the 20th century is mainly due to the phylloxera crisis in viticulture as well as the mechanization of agriculture and the closure of small farms. The renewed increase in population at the beginning of the 21st century is due to the great tourist importance of the place.

economy

The region has always been oriented towards agriculture; Until well into the 20th century, the residents lived mainly as self-sufficient . Viticulture again plays an important role in the economic life of the municipality, in which many vacant houses are rented out as holiday apartments ( gîtes ) .

history

The castle hill was probably fortified before the 12th century; the place name first mentioned in 1115 was Birontium . In the Hundred Years War (1337-1453) the region was fought over between the English and the French. In the second half of the 16th century, the Barons von Biron joined Protestantism ; then the place and its surroundings were involved in the decades of Huguenot Wars (1562–1598).
