Vergt-de-Biron is a French municipality with 194 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Dordogne in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine (before 2016: Aquitaine ). The municipality belongs to the arrondissement Bergerac and the canton Lalinde (until 2015: canton Monpazier ).

The name in the Occitan language is Al Vèrn and means " alder ".

The inhabitants are called Vernois and Vernoises .

Vergt-de-Biron is located approx. 40 km southeast of Bergerac in the Bergeracois area of the historic province of Périgord on the southern border with the neighboring Lot-et-Garonne department .

Vergt-de-Biron lies in the catchment area of ​​the Garonne River .

history

In 1827 the municipality of Vergt-de-Biron was integrated into the municipality of Biron. In 1840 Vergt-de-Biron became an independent municipality again with the addition of the hamlets of Bertis in the south and Saint-Cernin in the northeast of what is now the municipality.

Population development

After regaining independence in 1840 with a larger area, the number of inhabitants showed a high of 715. In the following period, a decline set in until the 1970s, which let the number of inhabitants fall to around 170 inhabitants during short recovery phases before it settled on a level of around 190 residents stabilized.
