Rouffignac-de-Sigoulès is a French municipality with 311 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Dordogne in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine (before 2016: Aquitaine ). The municipality belongs to the Arrondissement Bergerac and the canton Sud-Bergeracois (until 2015: Canton Sigoulès ).
The name in the Occitan language is Rofinhac des Sigolés . Several theories revolve around its origins. It could be derived from an estate that belonged to a "Rufinius" in Gallo-Roman times . Another explanation is that of an estate of an earlier villa and a vicus founded by Minister Rufinus in the fifth century. Another advocates a reference to the Fontanguillère grotto , as Raufi or Roffi means "grotto" in the old French language .
The inhabitants are called Rouffignacois and Rouffignacoises .

history
The Fontanguillère cave indicates early settlement of the area, as it served as a shelter in the Paleolithic and as a burial site in the Bronze Age . In the Middle Ages Rouffignac belonged to the castellany of Puyguilhem , which was founded by Comte Guilhem, a contemporary of Charlemagne . In the 12th century, the Seigneur von Bergerac acquired the parish. In the 16th century it fell under the jurisdiction of Montcuq, which is now a hamlet of Pomport. The Bergerac castellany was divided in the 17th century and Rouffignac now belonged to the Seigneurs of Monbazillac and Bridoire, which is now a hamlet of the neighboring municipality of Ribagnac.

Parish Church of Saint-Claire
The Romanesque church was remodeled in the 14th century on the foundations of an earlier castle. The current bell tower emerged from its keep .
Fontanguillère grotto
The terrain was created by the creek of the Gardonnette river. The first part of the name "Font" comes from the French fontaine ( German source ). The second part is probably a reference to the eels ( French anguilles ) in the river. Another theory is based on a derivation from the French angle ( German corner, branching ). The grotto contained human skeletons that are still scattered here or in various museums today. Flint throwing knives and other objects have also been found here. Remnants of a dolmen have been discovered on the banks of a nearby stream, the Caborne .
