Flaugeac is a village and a former French commune of 325 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Dordogne in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine (before 2016: Aquitaine ). The municipality belonged to the Arrondissement Bergerac and the canton Sud-Bergeracois (until 2015: Canton Sigoulès ).

The decree of November 15, 2018 established the incorporation of Flaugeac as Commune déléguée together with the former municipality of Sigoulès to form Commune nouvelle Sigoulès-et-Flaugeac with effect from January 1, 2019 . The administrative headquarters are in Sigoulès.

The name in the Occitan language is Flaujac and is derived from a villa in Gallo-Roman times that belonged to a "Flavius".

The inhabitants are called Flaugeacois and Flaugeacoises .

Flaugeac is located approx. 12 km southwest in the catchment area ( Aire urbaine ) of Bergerac in the Bergeracois region of the historic province of Périgord in the southwest of the department.

Flaugeac is located in the catchment areas of the Dordogne and Garonne rivers .

The Gardonnette, one of its tributaries, crosses the Flaugeac area together with its tributary, the Ruisseau l'Ayguessou. Flaugeac is also irrigated by the Escourou, a tributary of the Dropt .

history

Flaugeac developed in the Middle Ages . In the 16th century the archpriesthood was moved from Gageac to Flaugeac. Until the end of the Ancien Régime , the parish was the most important religious center in the region with a primacy over 59 parishes.

Population development

After records began, the population rose to a peak of 415 in the first half of the 19th century. Subsequently, the size of Flaugeac decreased to around 205 people with brief recovery periods by the 1930s, before growing until the 1950s began, which raised the population to a relative high of around 280. A phase of stagnation set in until the 1980s, followed by another phase of at times strong growth that continues to this day.

West facade

The church was built in the 15th century. Its striking element is its massive west facade with a pointed arched entrance portal with four archivolts . Further up, two arched wall openings of different sizes hold the bells. The apse is flat. The interior of the nave has elegant twisted pillars . The vault was destroyed in the 16th century during the Huguenot Wars and is now replaced by paneling .

Maurillac manor

It is located on a hill above the Gardonnette valley and was the residence of several landlord families . Today's modern house replaces a former aristocratic residence, which was first mentioned in the writings in 1363 under the toponym Maurelhac on the occasion of an homage to the English heir to the throne in Bergerac. The property is privately owned and is not open to the public.

The Boucle du Bois de Monsieur - Flaugeac circular route is 8.3 km long with a difference in altitude of 73 m. It leads from the center through the Flaugeac area through the vineyards.

The Route départementale 933, the former Route nationale 133 , Flaugeac crossed from north to south and connects Flaugeac in the north and in the south Bergerac with Eymet , the capital of Canton, and subsequently with communities of neighboring departments. Route départementale 15 crosses Flaugeac from west to southeast and connects Flaugeac in the west with Sigoulès, the capital of the former canton, and in the southeast with Singleyrac.

Flaugeac is connected to other communes in the department by a line on the Transpérigord bus network from Bergerac to Eymet .
