In the 19th century, the community consistently had between 700 and 950 inhabitants. As a result of the phylloxera crisis in viticulture and the increasing mechanization of agriculture , the number of inhabitants has since declined to the lows in the 1970s.
economy
In earlier times, the inhabitants of the community lived as self-sufficient farmers from agriculture, which also included viticulture and a little cattle farming. The rental of holiday homes ( gîtes ) now plays an important role in the economic life of the municipality.
history
The Romanesque church suggests that the place has been settled since the Middle Ages at the latest. In the 15th century, the place belonged to the manor ( seigneurie ) of the Counts of Foix-Grailly , whose coat of arms forms the essential part of today's coat of arms.
Attractions
The parish church of Saint-Martin is a Romanesque building from the 12th century, the imposing facade of which has unmistakable echoes of the architecture of the northwestern cultural landscapes of the Charente and the Saintonge : the portal zone, designed according to a triumphal arch scheme, consists of a central archivolt portal and two side blind portals ; the seven-arched arcade zone above (with a central window) ends with a console frieze and the gable remains - as usual - unadorned. The single nave nave is barrel vaulted ; the crossing is spanned by a dome and the apse shows the usual dome vault . The bell storey of the crossing tower is - unlike the lower part - made of rubble stones; the sound openings are unadorned. The church building was recognized as a monument historique as early as 1912 .
