Boisse mills

Boisse is a French commune of 246 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Dordogne in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine (before 2016: Aquitaine ). The municipality belongs to the Arrondissement Bergerac and the canton Sud-Bergeracois (until 2015: canton Issigeac ).

The name in the Occitan language is Boissa . It is derived from the Latin buxus ( German  boxwood ).

The inhabitants are called Boissiens and Boissiennes .

Boisse is located about 20 km southeast of Bergerac in the Bergeracois region of the historic Périgord province on the southern border with the neighboring Lot-et-Garonne department .

history

The area must have been continuously settled for a very long time, because an earthen vessel with coins with images of Roman emperors was found near a dolmen from prehistory in 1851 . In the Middle Ages , Boisse was a noble retreat, which had a certain importance due to its geographical location on the crest of a hill. In the 16th century the castellany belonged to the Escodéca family, who ruled the village until the 17th century. In the following century, the fief went to the de la Force family. The construction of two windmills subsequently allowed the economy to develop.

Between 1790 and 1794, the parishes of Le Petit Boisse and Saint Amand de Boisse were incorporated into the municipality of Boisse.

Parish Church of Saint-Pierre

A chapel was originally built on this site in the 11th century . It served as the seat of the brotherhood of penitential preachers from Saint-Côme-d'Olt . In the 16th century it was expanded to become a parish church in honor of St. Peter . Its specialty is its sinuous steeple.

Menhir, called Caillou of Monjerma
