Razac-de-Saussignac is a French municipality with 332 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Dordogne in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine (before 2016: Aquitaine ). The municipality belongs to the Arrondissement Bergerac and the canton Sud-Bergeracois (until 2015: Canton Sigoulès ).

The name in the Occitan language is Rasac de Saussinhac , which is derived from an estate that belonged to a "Rhetius" in Gallo-Roman times .

The inhabitants are called Razacois and Razacoises .

Razac-de-Saussignac is located approx. 20 km southwest in the catchment area ( Aire urbaine ) of Bergerac in the Bergeracois area of the historic province of Périgord on the southwest border with the neighboring Gironde department .

Razac-de-Saussignac is located in the catchment area of ​​the Dordogne river .

The Seignal , one of its left tributaries, forms the natural border with the western neighboring communities of the Gironde department. The Ruisseau de Fonlade is a tributary of the Seignal and has its source in Razac-de-Saussignac.

The Ruisseau des Gouttes, also called Marmant on the upper reaches, is a tributary of the Moiron and crosses the area of ​​the municipality.

history

In Gallo-Roman times, there was a handsome villa at the site of today's center , which was probably destroyed by the Sarrazen in the eighth century . From the eighth century until the end of the Ancien Régime , Razac was dependent on Saussignac . During the French Revolution , the two parishes were dissolved to form one parish with the seat in Saussignac. Due to the Concordat of 1801 , services were reintroduced in both parishes. The chaplain from Saussignac led the masses in Razac until the end of the restoration . The municipality of Razac became independent from Saussignac in 1836. The pastor of Saussignac remained the parish administrator in Razac until 1845 .

Attractions

Parish Church of Saint Barthélemy

It was rebuilt in 1860, but has retained its 11th century foundations and its Romanesque shape. Its special feature is the semicircular apse with two flanking apsidioles.

Bellevue Palace

The castle was rebuilt around 1630 on the previous fiefdom of the Grands Négrauds. The estate, also known as the Artudière mansion, was directly subordinate to the French king and consisted of several buildings. The main house with a rectangular floor plan is framed by two square pavilions . Various plants have enlarged the country estate. Ancillary buildings were built behind the main house to form a courtyard. The owner families of the castle were successively the Papus, Brugières, Maillard-Dascols, then the Lambert de Thénac. The castle is now privately owned and cannot be visited.

Chabrier Castle

It was built in 1640 on the ruins of an earlier castle, which was destroyed in the Hundred Years War in 1345 by troops of Henry of Grosmont, 1st Duke of Lancaster , Earl of Derby , when attacking the neighboring castle of Fayolle. The castle consists of a central residential wing to which two side wings adjoin. The specialty of the castle are its wine cellars, some of which are carved into the rock. Today the castle continues its important operation as a winery.

  • The long-distance hiking trail GR 654 from Namur in Belgium via Vézelay to Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port leads together with the GR 6 through the center of Razac-de-Saussignac. It follows the Via Lemovicensis, one of the four Camino de Santiago in France.
