The Aeropuerto Alfredo Noa Díaz (also: "Aeropuerto de Punta De Maisi", ICAO code : MUMA, IATA code : UMA) is an airport in the Cuban city of Maisí ( Guantánamo province ). It serves the regional connection of the city and the region. The airport is located in the east of the city about 1 km from the city center.

Surname

The airport is called "Alfredo Noa Díaz". Alfredo de Jesús Noa Díaz was a member of the air force of the Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias (short: "FAR", Spanish for: "Revolutionary Armed Forces") and died on April 18, 1961 during the attack on Playa Girón during the invasion organized by the United States Bay of Pigs .

Flight service

Punta de Maisí is one of the most inaccessible places in all of Cuba. A flight service was therefore set up for the residents that connects them three times a week with the city of Baracoa . There you will find everything you need for everyday care. This flight connection is essential for healthcare in particular.

Approximately 70 km are covered in just 15 minutes, which would take six to seven hours on the road due to the rugged geography and the local road conditions.

A few months after the revolution , revolutionary leader Fidel Castro visited Punta de Maisí to take part in the commemoration of fallen revolutionaries. Until then, the flight services were only sporadically covered by a private aircraft. Fidel Castro made the flight connection official and opened it on July 10, 1970. Since then, flight service has been carried out with an Antonov An-2 .

During the special period in peacetime there were some restrictions on the line as there were problems with the procurement of spare parts and fuel. However, with the economic recovery, the airline was back to regular service.

The airline is almost entirely subsidized by the Cuban state . Passengers only pay a symbolic amount.
