Ginestet is a French municipality with 729 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Dordogne in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine (before 2016: Aquitaine ). The municipality belongs to the Arrondissement Bergerac and the canton Pays de la Force (until 2015: canton La Force ).
The name in the Occitan language is Ginèstet , which is derived from the Latin gestetum and means " ground covered with gorse ". The region is rich in plants of this genus.
The inhabitants are called Ginestois and Ginestoises .
geography
Ginestet is located about eight km northwest in the catchment area ( Aire urbaine ) of Bergerac in the Bergeracois region of the historic province of Périgord in the southwest of the department.

Tributaries of the Dordogne irrigate the territory of the commune,
- the Gouyne, which rises in Ginestet, and
- the Eyraud, along with its tributary,
- the Ruisseau de la Forêt, which rises in Ginestet.
In addition, a tributary of the Caudeau , the Ruisseau de Marmelet, also called Ruisseau de Ladoux, crosses the area of the municipality with its tributary, the Gaillardet.
history
Traces of settlement during the Paleolithic and the Neolithic Age have been discovered in Ginestet. It is believed that the Saracens passed the area of today's municipality, because there is a hamlet called "les Sarrazies" in the neighboring municipality of Maurens. A church register from the 13th century mentions a church that has now disappeared.

Population development
After records began, the size of the community rose to over 500 inhabitants in the first half of the 19th century. From the beginning of the 20th century the number of inhabitants fell to 345 after the Second World War , before a period of strong growth began, which reached a peak of around 820 inhabitants shortly after the turn of the millennium. As a result, stagnation set in that continues to this day.

Parish Church of Saint-Jacques-le-Majeur
The church, consecrated to James the Elder , was built in 1880 in neo-Gothic style. The entrance to the vestibule is at the foot of the four-part, pointed bell tower , which is secured with buttresses .
Parish Church of Sainte-Foy
The church dedicated to Saint Fides was built in the 19th century in the hamlet of Sainte-Foy-des-Vignes and restored in the same century. The unadorned facade shows an arched entrance portal and a roof turret with a bell.

The Route départementale 709, the former Route nationale 709 , Ginestet crossed from north to south and connects the town to the north with a junction of Autoroute A 89 , called La Transeuropéenne , and in the course of Mussidan on the transport route Bordeaux - Périgueux . Route départementale 4 crosses Ginestet from southwest to northeast and connects Ginestet in the southwest with La Force , the capital of the canton, and in the northeast with Périgueux.
