Magdalena von Staupitz
Magdalena von Staupitz (* around 1485 in Motterwitz ; † 1548 in Grimma ) was a nun and headmistress of the first elementary school for girls in Grimma. She was the sister of the theologian Johann von Staupitz and belonged together with Katharina von Bora to the nine nuns who in 1523 during the Reformation from the monastery Nimbschen fled.
Life
Magdalena von Staupitz was born around 1485 on the former manor Motterwitz near Grimma as the daughter of a family of the lower nobility. In 1501 she was admitted to the Marienthron Cistercian monastery in Nimbschen , where she received lessons in reading, writing and Latin. In addition, she took over the service of organist and cantor in the monastery.
Like many monks and nuns at that time, Magdalena von Staupitz left the Nimbschen monastery on Easter vigil in 1523, together with Katharina von Bora and seven other nuns, and ended up penniless via Torgau to Wittenberg , where she lived and worked for several years as a private tutor.
In 1529 von Staupitz was appointed director of the first elementary school for girls in Grimma. In 1537 she married Tiburtius Geuder, a citizen of Grimma. The marriage remained childless, and von Staupitz ran the girls' school until her death in 1548. With the intercession of Martin Luther, the visitors in Grimma gave her a small house south of the old Augustinian monastery on the Mulde . When electoral sequestrators wanted to take the house back from her in 1531 , Luther stepped up energetically for her cause and she was able to stay in the house.
