Chicago (Kittsee Municipality)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Chicago is part of the market town of Kittsee in Burgenland .

The district is located in the north of Kittsee and the name goes back to the rapid construction progress. When the first houses were built in this part of the village around 1910, 7 alleys were built, each consisting of 8 to 10 houses. A Kittseer who had returned from America and was astonished by this rapid construction activity said that progress was going as fast here as in Chicago , whereupon the then unnamed district was given the name Chicago .

In 2017 Theodora Bauer published the novel Chikago , in which she tells the story of Burgenland emigrants in the early 1920s.
