Saint-Michel-de-Montaigne ( Sent Miquèu de Montanha in Occitan ) is a French commune with 337 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Dordogne department and the Aquitaine region .

geography

The place Saint-Michel-de-Montaigne is located in the southwest of the Dordogne , about 75 km southwest of Périgueux and 40 km west of Bergerac . The next larger town is Castillon-la-Bataille in the Gironde department . The place has three hamlets: Illarets, Petit Moulin and Bonnefare. The community has a large forest area and mainly agriculture and viticulture are practiced.

Attractions

St. Michel Church

The 12th century church of St. Michel was partially destroyed by fire during the Huguenot Wars . It was restored at the beginning of the 17th century thanks to a donation from the wife of the Lord of Montaigne. It has been a French cultural monument since 1970 .

Montaigne Castle

The local castle dates from the 16th and 17th centuries and was largely destroyed in 1885 but was soon rebuilt in neo-renaissance style. The palace, surrounded by a park, is now open to the public and was the residence of the family of the philosopher Michel de Montaigne. The castle has been a French cultural monument since 1952.

Personalities

The most famous son of the place is Michel de Montaigne (1533–1592), Member of Parliament (judge at the Supreme Court) in Bordeaux, multiple mayor of Bordeaux and the founder of the literary genre of the essay . He lived in his Montaigne castle until his death. Today the castle is a popular destination.
