Fonroque is a French municipality with 326 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Dordogne in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine (before 2016: Aquitaine ). The municipality belongs to the Arrondissement Bergerac and the canton Sud-Bergeracois (until 2015: canton Eymet ).

The name in the Occitan language is Font Ròca ( German  rock spring ) and goes back to the Latin "fons" ( German  spring ) and "roca" ( German  rock ).

The inhabitants are called Fonroquois and Fonroquoises .

Fonroque is located about 20 km south-south-west of Bergerac in the Bergeracois region of the historic province of Périgord on the south-western edge of the department.

The Ruisseau du Réveillou, a tributary of the Dropt , marks the border with the neighboring municipalities of Razac-d'Eymet and Serres-et-Montguyard. Its tributaries, the Ruisseau du Touron and the Rieu du Lac, have their source in Fonroque.

history

The English King Edward I founded Fonroque in 1284 on a rock above the Dropt valley as a bastide , which was subsequently not completed. In the years after its founding, the parish flourished and in 1365 41 families were already living in Fonroque. In 1764 it was under the jurisdiction of Sarlat and the Sénéchaussée of Bergerac. Before the French Revolution Fonroque belonged to the lordship of Puyguilhem who served in April 1790 establishing the canton of Eymet.

Parish Church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste

The original church was built by the English in the 14th century in Romanesque style. It was partially destroyed during the Huguenot Wars in the 16th century. The Gothic entrance portal from the 15th century has been preserved to this day. In 1887 the church dedicated to John the Baptist underwent a complete redesign. Its bell gable is interrupted by three wall openings that hold the bells. A balcony was used for defensive purposes. The nave dominates a polygonal apse .

Manoir de Plaisance

The manor house , a small country castle of the Lambert family, is located in the southwest of the municipality . It was built in the 17th century on a hill above the valleys of the Touron and Réveillou rivers. The property appears imposing with the four square towers. His style is influenced by the classicist baroque . The property has a square dovecote that was built on a barn. The mansion is privately owned and is not open to the public.
