The Dordogne at Mouleydier |
Mouleydier ( Occitan Mont Leidièr ) is a French commune with 1,132 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Dordogne department in southwestern France .
geography
Mouleydier is located in the south of the Dordogne department, which belongs to the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region , on the north bank of the Dordogne river . The place is crossed by the state road D660. Upstream from Mouleydier is the Barrage de Tuilières dam , built in the early 20th century.
history
In the 12th century a fortress was built above Mouleydier, which was besieged and destroyed by Bertrand du Guesclin in 1375 . The ruins are still visible today (2012). In the following centuries the community developed into an important inland port on the Dordogne, and a large staircase of locks was built.
During the French Revolution , Mouleydier was united with the neighboring parish of Saint-Cibard . In the period of de-Christianization decreed by the National Convention up to 1795, the addition of Saint was dropped until the name that is still valid today was finally adopted.
The German-Jewish glass painting and glass mosaic manufacturer Gottfried Heinersdorff has been hiding in Mouleydier since 1940. He was buried here after his death on October 24, 1941.
On June 21, 1944, the community was completely looted and burned down by German troops in retreat. 22 Maquis resistance fighters were then shot in Moleydier. Rue du 21-Juin 1944 commemorates this event today . The reconstruction took place in the years 1945 to 1955.
