Monmarvès is a French municipality with 64 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Dordogne in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine (before 2016: Aquitaine ). The municipality belongs to the Arrondissement Bergerac and the canton Sud-Bergeracois (until 2015: canton Issigeac ).

The name in the Occitan language is Mont Marvès . The first part of the name means "hill", "mountain", the origin of the second part of the name is unknown. It could go back to the name of a person beginning with "Marv-".

Monmarvès is located approx. 20 km southeast of Bergerac in the Bergeracois area of the historic Périgord province on the southern border with the neighboring Lot-et-Garonne department .

Population development

At the beginning of the records at the end of the 18th century, the size of the parish peaked with around 180 inhabitants. In the first half of the 19th century, the population initially fell, but was able to rise again to a relative high of around 170 inhabitants by the middle of the same century. In the period that followed, a long phase of stagnation began, during which the size of the community sank to around 40 inhabitants with short recovery phases by the 1980s, before a moderate growth phase set in, which continues to this day.

Attractions

Church Sainte-Marie

The parish is the only one in the department that no longer has a church. The earlier church was built in the 12th century and destroyed in the Huguenot Wars . Today only a ruin can be seen with the southern half of the apse and the Romanesque walls of the nave .

Gauthié Castle

The different parts of the castle date from the 15th, 17th and 19th centuries. It has been restored according to the Périgord tradition and is located in the middle of an eight hectare park with centenary trees. The palace complex, which today offers guest rooms, includes a garden, a rose garden and a pond.

The Boucle de la Nette - Monmarvès circular route is 6.5 km long with a difference in altitude of 71 m. It leads on foot or by bike from the center of the municipality to the river of the Nette and its reservoir. The path also leads past the menhir of the neighboring municipality of Boisse, past dovecotes and the tower of a former windmill that once used the wind power at its location on the crest of a hill to produce flour.
