Culture and sights

A 1st century Gallo-Roman villa was destroyed in the 3rd century and rebuilt in the 4th century. Later on, until 1850, this building was used for religious purposes. Five 4th century Christian mosaics were found in the building. In 1926 they were listed as “ historical monuments ”.

Fauga Castle was built in the 18th century. It was built by a Protestant family. In the basement there was an escape route to the hamlet of La Rouquette. The building consists of a main house with two side wings, to the west of which there is a round tower. A kitchen with a Louis quinze fireplace has been preserved in the left wing of the castle . The right wing previously served as a cowshed and ends with an older building that is closed off by a round tower. In 1989 the castle was entered in the additional list of "historical monuments".

Port-Sainte-Foy-et-Ponchapt belongs to the Roman Catholic community Communauté des deux Rives du Pays Foyen ('the two banks of the Foy countryside'), which is part of the parish of Sainte Marie en Périgord Foyen of the diocese of Périgueux and Sarlat .

The Catholic Church of Ponchapt was originally the chapel of a castle. The castle was destroyed in the French Revolution (1789-1799). A hundred meters north of the church there is a source believed to be miraculous. The chapel and spring were on a historic part of the Camino de Santiago . Shortly before the start of the revolution, the chapel was enlarged, a bell tower was added and it was declared the parish church of Ponchapt. Until 1924 the church was surrounded by a cemetery, which was then taken out of town. Since the community was created through a merger of several localities, there are a total of three Catholic churches.

The first Protestant church was established as early as 1591 in the course of the Reformation . It existed until 1677. A second church was built in 1827 and destroyed in a flood in 1843. A third church was built in 1866 and consecrated in 1870 in the presence of 22 Protestant pastors. This building is no longer used for church services today. There is a Protestant church and a Protestant museum in the neighboring parish of Sainte-Foy-la-Grande.
