history

Today's church is the result of the merger of three earlier churches during the French Revolution . The municipality of Le Monteil merged with the municipality of Lamonzie in 1794 and a year later, Lamonzie and the municipality of Saint-Martin-de-Gardenne merged to form the municipality today.

In Lamonzie the remains of a Gallo-Roman villa with thermal baths , an aqueduct and parts of a sarcophagus were discovered in the last century . In the Middle Ages , Lamonzie developed as one of the oldest parishes in the region. It got its name after the establishment of a priory for nuns in the parish of Saint-Sylvain at the end of the 10th century by Boson I , Count of the Marche and Périgords. The grandson of Boson I made the decision in 1074 to donate the parish church of Saint-Sylvain and the priory to the Abbaye aux Dames Saintes in Saintes . The monastery was subsequently sacked by the Saracens , then by the Normans and later by the English . It was finally completely destroyed by Protestant troops in the 16th century . The simple church from the 10th century was restored in the 15th and 17th centuries and eventually replaced by a modern structure. The parish of Saint-Martin was separated from the castellany of Bergerac and Montcuq in the 16th century . The castle was henceforth the seat of the judicial district, which bore the title of baronate and in 1760 included the parishes of Lamonzie, Saint-Martin, Saint-Laurent and Le Monteil.

coat of arms

Coat of arms of the municipality of Lamonzie-Saint-Martin

According to Marie-Thérèse Verdier from Lamonzie-Saint-Martin, the coat of arms can be interpreted as follows. The division of the coat of arms into three stakes reflects the composition of the three parishes, the three associated parish churches and the three castles. The three stars on the left represent the three communities that have retained their own character. Its golden color recognizes that every previous parish has managed to live in good harmony in one parish for more than two hundred years. The coat of arms of an abbess bears the bell tower of the Saint-Sylvain church in its center and is reminiscent of the nunnery that was founded towards the end of the 10th century. The three silver towers represent the three castles in Lamonzie-Saint-Martin, two of which still exist today.

Population development

After records began, the size of the community rose to an initial high of around 1,335 inhabitants in the mid-19th century. As a result, the number of inhabitants could be kept at over 1,000 until the 1930s saw a phase of at times strong growth that continues to this day and results in new highs of over 2,400 inhabitants.
