Thénac is a French municipality with 488 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Dordogne in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine (before 2016: Aquitaine ). The municipality belongs to the Arrondissement Bergerac and the canton Sud-Bergeracois (until 2015: Canton Sigoulès ).

The name in the Occitan language is Tenac and can be traced back to an estate that belonged to an "Attenus" in Gallo-Roman times .

The inhabitants are called Thénacais and Thénacaises .

Thénac is located about 16 km southwest of Bergerac in the Bergeracois area of the historic Périgord province on the southern border with the neighboring Lot-et-Garonne department .

Thénac is located in the catchment areas of the Dordogne and Garonne rivers .

The Seignal , also known as the Ruisseau du Bernadou in the upper reaches, is a tributary of the Dordogne and for the most part forms the natural border with the neighboring municipality of Loubès-Bernac to the west.

The Ruisseau du Vacher is a tributary of the Gardonnette . It rises in Thénac as well as its tributaries,

  • the Besageou,
  • the Ruisseau de Monbos,
  • the Ruisseau de la Linière and
  • the Merlan.

The Ruisseau du Touron, also called Ruisseau les Rivailles in the lower reaches, is a tributary of the Escourou and lies in the catchment area of ​​the Garonne. It rises in Thénac just like its tributary, the Rivaille.

history

On January 1, 1973, the municipalities of Monbos and Puyguilhem joined the municipality of Thénac, with the previous municipalities receiving the status of Communes associées . On January 1, 2011, the merger was transformed into a simple merger.

The coat of arms was developed in 1996. Field 1 and field 4 of the crossing is occupied by the coat of arms of the Alba family and represents Thénac. The occupancy of two of the four fields indicates that the Mairie of the municipality is in Thénac. Field two is covered with the coat of arms of the Caumont de Lauzun family and represents Puyguilhem. Field 3 shows the keys of the apostle Peter and stands for Monbos.

Population development

After records began, the population rose to an initial high of around 485 by the first half of the 19th century. In the period that followed, the size of the community fell to around 230 inhabitants by the 1960s, with short recovery phases. The merger with Monbos and Puyguilhem brought a brief increase in the population to around 380 inhabitants, which fell to 300 by the beginning of the 1990s, before a phase of at times strong growth began, which continues to this day.
