Antoine Barber
Antoine Barbier (born May 8, 1859 in Saint-Symphorien-de-Lay , † February 8, 1948 in Lyon ) was a French watercolorist and orientalist painter .
Antoine Barbier was an extraordinary person. Watercolor painting was only one of his fields of activity. He worked in Algeria as a topographer and professor of French. He worked in Turkey, became court painter to the Tsar of Bulgaria, was a poet and writer.
He also dealt with wall painting, created a. a. the “Flight into Egypt” in the Matarieh Church in Cairo , in the Parliament and the Royal Palace of Bulgaria, in the Roanne Chamber of Commerce and in the Lyon-Brotteaux train station . He led courses in watercolor painting in France, England, Italy and Switzerland.
Barbier was made an honorary member of the Société des artistes français and was awarded the Société silver medal in 1925.
After leaving Algeria, he settled in Lyon. He was married to Lucie, a musician and painter under the pseudonym Tinam.
His works are in the museum in Lyon as well as in Bern, Brussels, Oxford, Algiers and Cairo.
A street in Lyon was named after Antoine Barbier.
