The Sud-Ouest wine-growing region

The Montravel wine-growing region is located on the hillside between Port-Sainte-Foy and Saint-Michel-de-Montaigne, in the far west of the Dordogne department and borders the Côtes de Castillon wine-growing region in Bordeaux . Montravel is part of the Bergerac area within the Sud-Ouest region . Most of the white wines produced there have enjoyed the status of an Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée since 1937 . On November 23, 2001, the area was finally recognized for its red wine .

The approved vineyards with a size of 2100 hectares are distributed among the municipalities of Bonneville-et-Saint-Avit-de-Fumadières , Fougueyrolles , Lamothe-Montravel , Montazeau , Montcaret , Montpeyroux (Dordogne) , Nastringues , Port-Sainte-Foy-et -Ponchapt , Saint-Antoine-de-Breuilh , Saint-Méard-de-Gurçon , Saint-Michel-de-Montaigne , Saint-Seurin-de-Prats , Saint-Vivien (Dordogne) and Vélines . In 2002, only 378 hectares of the total area were used for the production of Montravel ; this is divided into three appellations. The quantities refer to the year 2002:

Climate and soil

The Bergerac region is subject to a strong oceanic influence with mild winters. Rainfall is particularly heavy in spring and late autumn. The summers, on the other hand, are mostly hot and dry. The weather is often stable well into November. Fog often forms in the Dordogne valley , favoring the development of noble rot .

On the orographically right bank of the Dordogne, the soil on the border with the Gironde department consists of limestone with red clay as a weathering product on the surface. In the lower elevations, the loamy-chalky molasse comes to light; it is predominantly white wines that grow here.
