Muscadelle

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Muscadelle is a white wine variety . With Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc, it is involved in the great sweet wines of Bordeaux such as Sauternes and Barsac , Cérons , Loupiac , Sainte-Croix-du-Mont and Cadillac . The same applies to the sweet wines of the Sud-Ouest wine-growing region with its appellations Bergerac , Monbazillac , Montravel and Saussignac . The variety is also used in the white wines of Rosette , Côtes de Duras , Côtes de Blaye , Côtes de Bourg and Graves, as well as in the sparkling wine Crémant de Bordeaux . However, 80% of the vines are in the Entre deux mers region . In 2007, a vineyard area of 1,618 hectares was surveyed in France (source ONIVINS)

Other locations of the Muscadelle grape are in Eastern Europe in Hungary , Romania and Ukraine , in South Africa , in California ( viticulture in California with the wine-growing regions Napa Valley AVA , Dry Creek Valley AVA and Sonoma Valley AVA ) and in Australia . In Uruguay , Pierre Galet found Muscadelle vines that were mistakenly marketed there under the name Sémillon. The worldwide vine stock is estimated at around 4000 hectares.

The Muscadelle grape does not belong to the Muscat family , even if the fruity aroma of its wines may vaguely recall it. It comes from the old grape variety Heunisch . The other parent is currently unknown.

The American Harold Olmo used the grape variety to breed the Emerald Riesling by crossing the Muscadelle variety with the Riesling .

Ampelographic varietal characteristics

In ampelography , the habitus is described as follows:

  • The shoot tip is open. It is white woolly to almost tomentose hair. The bronze-colored, blistered young leaves are only slightly hairy.
  • The large leaves are three-lobed and slightly deeply indented. The stem bay is usually lyre-shaped open (occasionally also closed). The sheet is serrated to a point. The teeth are set medium-wide compared to other grape varieties.
  • The conical to cylindrical grape is large and loose berries. The round berries are medium-sized and white with a slightly reddish-gray color. The berries have a slight note of nutmeg in the taste.

The grape variety ripens approx. 15 to 20 days after the Gutedel and is therefore almost still ripening early in international comparison.

The variety is susceptible to powdery mildew and sourworm, and is often infested by wasps. The late growing variety is often prone to gray mold rot if the berries are damaged by pests. However, the tendency to rot leads to noble rot under good conditions in autumn and makes the variety an ideal blending partner for sweet wines.

In spite of the generally weak yields of 50 to 80 hectoliters / hectare, they are usually still too high, so that targeted vine training has to reduce the yield in order to achieve good wine quality.
