Dry Creek Valley AVA (recognized since 1983) is a wine-growing region in the US state of California . The area is located in the northwestern part of the Sonoma County administrative area , northwest of the township of Healdsburg . The valley was formed by the Dry Creek, a tributary of the Russian River , and was approx. 25 km long and max. 3 km wide. Viticulture is only made possible by irrigation of the vineyards. The water required for this comes from the artificially dammed Lake Sonoma.

history

At the beginning of the 20th century, the wine-growing region was one of the most important producers of wines made from the Zinfandel grape variety. During the time of alcohol prohibition, the vines were replaced by plum, plum and pear trees. The world-famous company Sunsweet Growers near Healdsburg processed the fruits and exported the dried fruits worldwide. Viticulture has been gaining in importance again since the early 1970s, and Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel are the most important grape varieties. Sauvignon Blanc is currently the most important white grape variety in the valley.
