North Coast AVA (recognized since September 21, 1983) is a supraregional wine - growing region in the US state of California . The area extends north of San Francisco over the six administrative divisions Lake County , Marin County , Mendocino County , Napa County , Sonoma County and Solano County . This huge region covers an area of more than 12,000 km² and is divided into an abundance of smaller sub-regions. All sub-regions have in common that they benefit from the cooling mists of the Pacific Ocean .
Subregions
In order to take account of the terroir concept, the huge area was divided into an abundance of small AVAs. The following designations of origin are currently defined:

Counties
Under American law, every county in the United States has Protected Designation of Origin status. If you find the name North Coast or the name of a county on the label, the wine is usually made as a mixture of different subordinate growing regions.
