Russian River Valley AVA (recognized since October 21, 1983) is a wine-growing region in the US state of California . The area is located in the administrative area of Sonoma County in the immediate vicinity of the Russian River and borders the municipality of Sebastopol to the south .

The designation of origin stands for almost one sixth of the vineyards in Sonoma County. The Russian River Valley has a rather cool climate influenced by the morning mists of the nearby Pacific Ocean . The early maturing grape varieties Pinot Noir and Chardonnay therefore thrive here very well.
