The Chalk Hill AVA (recognized since October 21, 1983) is a wine-growing region in the US state of California . The area is located in the Sonoma County administrative area and overlaps with the northernmost part of the Russian River Valley AVA . The name Chalk Hill refers to the chalk-white soil made up of volcanic ash. The white grape varieties Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc thrive very well on these soils. Most of the Chalk Hill AVA's wineries are located on the western slopes of the Mayacamas Mountains .
