List of grape varieties |
Sauvignon gris is a white wine that arose from a mutation of the Sauvignon Blanc variety .
Although the skin of the grapes is reddish to red in color, it is assigned to the white varieties. The variety is u. a. cultivated in Baden , the Palatinate and on the Moselle . While this is usually used to make a light white wine, Schloss Thorn on the southern Moselle near Remich produces a slightly salmon-colored wine . Sauvignon gris is also known in Switzerland (8.2 hectares, as of 2017, source: Office fédéral de l'agriculture OFAG), Greece and France (407 hectares, where it is one of the red varieties). The variety is also cultivated in Chile, California ( Chalk Hill AVA ) and Uruguay. The transition to the Sauvignon rouge and Sauvignon violet variants is not precisely defined.

Ampelographic varietal characteristics
In ampelography , the habitus is described as follows:
- The shoot tip is open. It is very hairy with white wool with a slightly reddish tinge. The yellowish, slightly bronze colored young leaves are slightly hairy.
- The small to medium-sized leaves are rounded, mostly five-lobed and only slightly curved, but very wavy at the leaf edge. The stem bay is open in a V or U shape. The blade is bluntly serrated. The teeth are medium-sized compared to the grape varieties. The leaf surface (also called blade) is blistered and rough.
- The cylindrical grape is small and dense. The grape stalk is short and comparatively woody. The elongated berries are small and reddish in color. The skin of the berry is thick.
The Sauvignon gris sprouts relatively late (around a week after the Silvaner ). This avoids possible late spring frosts. The flowering time is also late. Sauvignon gris ripens around 20 to 25 days after the Gutedel . The variety has a very vigorous growth. However, the yield is limited by heavy irrigation and is a maximum of 60 - 70 hectoliters / hectare.
Compared to the genuine and downy mildew is mediocre vulnerable. It also tends to be attacked by black rot and raw rot .
