The wine grape is the name for the grape varieties that are used to produce wine. Typical wine grapes are the results of selection with the aim of achieving the best possible wine quality. In contrast to typical table grapes , they are rather small-berried, seed-rich and thick-skinned, but they can also taste great. The mostly higher acid content of wine grapes compared to table grapes is also significant. This is necessary for the production of balanced wines and, in addition to the lower content of tannins, one reason why table grapes are usually not suitable for wine production.

The name is derived from the wine press , a press used to express the juice from the grape berries .

A distinction is made between the wine grape varieties:

  • White wine varieties - for making white wine and
  • Red wine varieties - for making red wine.
