Ferdinand Regner

Ferdinand Regner (* 1963 ) is an Austrian scientist , teacher for viticulture and head of the grapevine breeding department at the Federal College and the Federal Office for Viticulture and Fruit Growing . He is considered a pioneering developer of the genotypic characterization of grape varieties with the help of molecular genetics .

Live and act

Ferdinand Regner studied food and biotechnology at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences in Vienna from 1981 . Seven years later he worked at the Institute for Applied Microbiology in the Department of Biotechnology and completed his training with a dissertation on the subject of “Resistance breeding using genetic engineering”. In 2003 he qualified as a professor at the Karl-Franzens-Universität Graz in the field of applied botany with the thesis: "Modern developments in grapevine science and grapevine breeding" . Since that time he has been holding a course on grapevine biology.

Since 2003 he has been teaching viticulture at the Austrian teaching and research center for viticulture and fruit growing in Klosterneuburg in Lower Austria. Regner determined the parentage or parenthood of the grape varieties Grüner Veltliner , Chardonnay , Madeleine Royale as the father variety of Müller-Thurgau , Neuburger , Austrian white , Riesling , Silvaner and Weißer Elbling . As part of his work, he created a directory of the Austrian quality wine grape varieties and their clones. In 2013, together with Karl Bauer and Barbara Schildberger, he revised and expanded the 8th edition of the specialist book "Viticulture".

Honors

In 1992 he was awarded the Austrian Biotechnology Prize for his work. Furthermore, Regner was awarded the title of Hofrat by the Federal President as a professional title . The association "Sponsors and Friends of the Institute for Vine Breeding Geilweilerhof eV" awarded him the Peter Morio Prize in 1998 . In 2000 he received the Geisenheim Research Prize from the Rudolf Hermanns Foundation for his work on genetic variety determination.
