List of grape varieties

Donauriesling is a white wine variety. Due to its good resistance to fungi, it is one of the PiWi varieties.

origin

Donauriesling is a cross of Riesling × Fr 589-54 (Seyve Villard 12-481 × Freiburg 153- 39 (Pinot Gris × Weißer Gutedel)) from grape breeding, under the direction of Ferdinand Regner , at the " Höhere Bundeslehranstalt und Bundesamt für Wein" - and fruit growing "in Klosterneuburg.

Ampelographic features

  • The tip of the shoots open and medium to slightly hairy, semi-upright to upright shoot position, with four- / five-membered tendrils (unique selling point).
  • The leaves are pentagonal with 3–5 lobes with a wavy profile. The stalk bay is strongly overlapping with a V-shaped base.
  • The grape is medium-sized (14-18 cm), medium-dense with a cylindrical shape. They have 1–3 wings and lobes are absent or medium-sized.
  • The growth is strong.
  • The buds appear late.
  • Maturity: late

Yield

  • The Donauriesling brings medium yields (higher than Riesling).

Expectations

The variety needs good locations because of the late ripening of the grapes.

Advantages and disadvantages

Donauriesling has very good winter frost resistance, very good resistance to downy mildew and oidium and good resistance to botrytis . It has little tendency for the berries to burst after autumn rainfall and tolerates drought well. One of the strengths of the Donauriesling in terms of wine properties is the pronounced small berry character, which has considerable advantages in terms of the extract.

The disadvantage is the late ripening of the variety and that the berries are sensitive to heat (sunburn).

Wine

The fruity and acidic young wines have to mature sufficiently before they are drunk.
